KNOW YOUR
ONIONS
Saturday, October 19, BBC Radio Wales, 1.05pm
www.bbc.co.uk/radiowales
A handful of wooden onions from Pontypool are causing keen gardeners across Wales to go into battle.
The coveted creations, handmade
from Welsh cherry wood by Joan and Clive Jones' family-run Woodland Turnery
in New Inn, Pontypool, are the prizes for BBC Radio Wales' gardening quiz
Know Your Onions (Saturday, October 19) which returns for a new series
this week.
"We love the challenge
of unusual commissions, but it was quite a surprise to receive a phone
call from BBC Radio Wales asking 'Can you turn wooden onions - we're looking
for 36!'" says Joan Jones.
"Clive promptly said 'How the hell am I going to turn an onion?'
But after a short time at the drawing board I'd designed how the onion
would be made. We chose Welsh cherry as it has the closest colour and
grain to a golden onion.
"We only had a short while to get the onions produced before the
first programme was recorded, so it was action stations at our workshops
near Chainbridge, Usk. Now the sample onion has pride of place on our
craft stall when we attend shows."
Presented by horticulturalist,
lecturer and broadcaster Sheena Crossley, the weekly quiz kicks off its
new season with two teams from the south west - The Hybrids from Burry
Port who go head-to-head with The Green Onions from Llanelli.
Broadcast from Pontardulais
Comprehensive School, The Hybrids (Marty Atkin, Kath Leach and Lynda Morse)
will have to dig deep into their gardening knowledge, and weed out the
right answers in order to beat The Green Onions (Colin Henshaw, Ralph
Davies and Wyn Beynon) to the prize.
This year's 12-part Know Your
Onions series will also feature a festive Christmas special Jubilee Edition,
with questions themed on plants with royal connections to mark the Queen's
Golden Jubilee Year.
